FundAmazonia has been conducting field courses on the management and conservation of wildlife in the Amazon since its creation in 2005, with more than 1,000 students, community members and professionals participating over the years.
The management of wildlife is a valuable conservation strategy in the Amazon as it promotes the sustainable use of natural resources by local people as well as the conservation of animal populations, habitats and biodiversity. In this sense, training students, community memebrs and anyone involved in the conservation of natural resources is essential.
The research, conservation and traning must adopt an interdisciplinary approach in order to find a balance between the needs of indigenous communities and the conservation of plants and animals. The field courses that FundAmazonia and collaborators include such an interdisciplinary focus in terms of the conservation of wildlife and the use of natural resources by indigenous peoples.
These field courses promote the conservation of wildlife by teaching participants 1) how to evaluate wildlife populations, 2) how to evaluate the sustainable use of wildlife, 3) the evaluation of habitats, 4) how to involve rural people in the management of wildlife and 5) the role of protected areas in the conservation of wildlife. To help indigenous communities the field courses include managemnet plans for sustainable use and teach communities members that depend on nautral resources how to incoporate susbistence practices into managements plans. The field courses allow the analysis of a model for wildlife management in the Amazon, based on extensive research on wildlife populations, sustainable use practices undertaken by the local people and conservation at the landscape-scale. The field courses on the monitoring of wildlife, biodiversity, populations and climate change are directed towards Peruvian students, community members and professionals in order to promote understanding of theories as well as methodologies.
The field courses have the following objectives:
1. Promote understanding of wildlife management in Amazonian forests
2. Promote understanding of the sustainable use of natural resources
3. Promote understanding of biodiversity
4. Promote understanding of the natural fluctuations in wildlife populations that inhabit a flooded ecosystems
5. Promote understanding of the impacts of climate change on wildlife
6. Promote understanding of methods of wildlife monitoring
7. Provide practice and experiece in wildlife monitoring
At the end of field courses, participants will possess a better understanding of wildlife managemnet, sustainable use, Amazonian biodiversity, the impacts of climate change and will have experience in wildlife monitoring a. They will also have gained a better understanding of how to find solutions to the diversity problems in terms of conservation and the sustainable use of wildlife.
The field courses involve academic institutions, which are key to selecting students. These include UNAP (Universidad Nacional de la Amazonía Peruana) and UCP (Universidad Científica del Perú). Invitations allowed insitutions in charge of training professionals in biology, forestry, ecology and the environment to participate in the field courses.
